Chivers Cottage. — A Sensitive Listed Cottage Extension, Cambridgeshire
LocationCambridgeshire
TypeListed Building Extension and Restoration
Size250sqm
CategoryListed & Contextual

A listed thatched cottage and contemporary addition carefully balanced against Green Belt policy, heritage constraints and family life.

The project brings together two demanding conditions: the conservation of a historic listed cottage and the restrictions of Green Belt planning policy. The design responds by making the new extension modest, legible and clearly subservient to the original building.

New family living space, utility areas and bedrooms are added while the historic cottage is carefully restored. Traditional repairs and contemporary interventions are kept distinct so old and new remain readable as separate layers.

The extension is proportioned to minimise visual impact and preserve openness. The outcome is a long-term family home that improves everyday life without erasing the character that made the existing cottage valuable.
